Stain Removal in Four Easy Steps
Remove stains such as coffee, wine, grease, grass, ink, and more with these four easy steps. This uncomplicated process will work on most stains, so be sure to bookmark this page.

1: Pre-treat the Stain
Stain removal step one is simple if you have the right products on hand. Use a pre-treater chemical made specifically for this. Simply rub it gently into the stain and wash after a few minutes.
For ink stains, use rubbing alcohol on a paper towel. Rub gently to transfer most of the stain from the fabric onto the towel. Repeat until most of the stain is gone, and then pre-treat and wash.
2: Launder the Item
When washing, be sure to use hot water (But not too hot, or it could set the stain) if your fabric allows (Check the care label). The hot water will open the fabric and help to release more of the stain. Always use a quality detergent and possibly Rinse and Refresh too. Using Downy Rinse and Refresh will help to remove any excess detergent and also more of the stain.
Always follow the detergent’s directions, as too much detergent will actually make it impossible to remove the dirt.
Never use fabric softener until you are sure the stain is gone! Fabric softener applies a layer of fat to your laundry and will make it even harder to remove the stain.
